U.S. Senate Passes Major Health Legislation
The U.S. Senate has passed the Lantos/Hyde U.S. Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act (S 2731), which reauthorizes the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The Bill had previously been passed by the House of Representatives. It would allow uS$50 billion over the next five years for these programs, if signed into law by the President, who had proposed an allocation of US$30 billion. The actual funding level will be determined by the actual appropriations bills that pass into law in each of the next five years. The large majority vote in favor of the bill appears to acknowledge the program as the most successful foreign policy initiative under the Bush administration.
